Stephen Johnson is a Full Professor in the Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Toronto. Throughout his career he has taught theatre history and performance theory, cinema studies, dramatic literature, and performance studies, as well as acting and directing. Stephen was the director of the Centre for Drama and Performance Studies for nine-years and also served as the President the Canadian Association for Theatre Research. He was co-editor of Theatre Research in Canada.
Stephen’s research explores the history of popular performance in North America, with a specific emphasis on the history of blackface performance. Our conversation focuses on Stephen’s recent work on reactions to blackface when it first arrived in Toronto.
